<i>Salt in Wounds is the most imaginative role-playing game setting it’s been my privilege to play in a long time. Equal parts grotesque and delightful, what J.M. Perkins has created here is masterfully realized and intriguingly believable. I highly recommend a visit to the city of Salt in Wounds -if you have a strong stomach, a love of fantastic world building, and a taste for the bizarre. In a plethora of game settings, this one stands out.</i><br />

<i><br /></i></div>
<div class="Default">
<i>After he rebirth, Dibus
would sometimes have trouble recalling his life, before: days filled with
gnomes, gears, cogs, smoke, and fire. But he did remember some things.<o:p></o:p></i></div>
<div class="Default">
<br /></div>
<div class="Default">
<i>The middle child of
five siblings, he felt he was often forgotten by his family. He never really
seemed to mind though as it left him time to go on walkabouts. He loved to be
in the wilds, and felt at times as though the plants, animals, very land could
speak to him. When he shared these impressions, his family -in a rare showing
of focused attention- scoffed; such daydreams were all well and good but his
place was in the workshop with the family. Frustrated, Dibus discovered his
love of food and cooking (and the acceptability of these pursuits); the scents
of stew and mash and dishes he had to learn the name of seduced and inspired
him. As he shifted from being an enthusiastic eater to a cook himself, his
meanders gained a purpose: to procure only the freshest, only the most
delicious vegetables, spices and more to improve his culinary craft Through
cooking for his family, then his extended family, and finally the clan in total
Dibus carved a comfortable, and somewhat fulfilling, niche as the go-to chef
for every meal of importance. But still, his itchy feet drove him to wander
further seeking some new (gastronomic) adventure till his wanderlust finally drove
him to the legendary city of Salt in Wounds and the promise of tastes and
flavors that couldn’t be found elsewhere. <o:p></o:p></i></div>
<div class="Default">
<br /></div>
<div class="Default">
<i>As his chartered
caravan drew close to the city, Dibus heard a call “Come to me… I have all that
you seek…” as plainly as if the caller were seated next to him though none of
his companions were speaking. He was confused, intrigued, and -almost in spite
of himself- knew he would have to heed the call. Waiting until the caravan settled
into sleep, Dibus started off into the Heartsblood Marsh. He had heard rumors
of how terrible the marsh was, but also knew that mushrooms and insects of a
kind not seen elsewhere grew here; that was almost enough reason for the journey
even without the call. <o:p></o:p></i></div>
<div class="Default">
<br /></div>
<div class="Default">
<i>As he walked, further
and further, that voice would repeat itself, growing stronger, more insistent
as it pulsed. ‘come, Come, COME.”<o:p></o:p></i></div>
<div class="Default">
<br /></div>
<div class="Default">
<i>Marching through the
red muddy ground, pushing past stalks of strange willowy mushrooms that reached
to the sky, and coughing hazy air filled with some kind of particulate; Dibus looked
up to find a castle of fungus with a river of blood -surely it couldn’t be
blood, could it?- flowing into it. He thought this to be some sort of metaphor
vision or illusion, but as he stared it only solidified. This was real. <o:p></o:p></i></div>
<div class="Default">
<br /></div>
<div class="Default">
<i>Dibus had found the
Fungal Sieve, the structure stemming the tide of the Tarrasque’s blood form
corrupting more of the world. And instantly, Dibus knew fear and knew he was
not alone. Above him, a dozen frog-men (grippli they were called he remembered
as though the bit of trivia mattered) watched him from the fungal stalks, tall
as treetops, and it felt as if the growths themselves were watching him. <o:p></o:p></i></div>
<div class="Default">
<br /></div>
<div class="Default">
<i>From within the
sieve, a figure lurched out. Lithe and thin, it reminded Dibus of one of the
elf-blood warriors he’d known. But rather than the regal appearance that Dibus
was used to, this creature was covered in fungus of various types from head to
toe. As he/they/it opened their mouth, Dibus turned and ran as fast as his legs
would carry him. <o:p></o:p></i></div>
<div class="Default">
<br /></div>
<div class="Default">
<i>Huffing and puffing
through long minutes, or maybe hours, later he was lost amongst the marsh and careening
as though drunk to avoid the ever-present dangers. And yet the fungal elf
continued, tireless. Growing slower, Dibus leaned against a large mushroom
stalk. It had been several years since he had attempted to commune directly
with nature, but he figured now may be the last chance he would ever have. <o:p></o:p></i></div>
<div class="Default">
<br /></div>
<div class="Default">
<i>Dibus tucked himself under
the base of a giant mushroom and began to seek council with whatever powers may
be present in the area. But this land was not like the glens and pastures of
his home; this land had a distinct personality to it, one that was strong and
forceful and quite insane. Reaching out with his subtle senses, Dibus’s consciousness
was jerked towards the Fungal Sieve. In a vision a face appeared, a fungal
version of himself, but… no. It was clearly a gnome, but the eyes flashed open
with a sickly green hue to them. This face was whatever or whoever whoever had
been calling to him. <o:p></o:p></i></div>
<div class="Default">
<br /></div>
<div class="Default">
<i>“I am Afrindi, no I
am Heartsblood Marsh, no I am the druid who controls this land, and you will
serve me/us/I now.” Dibus felt his mind start to slip as the world shifted. He
felt something gently burst near him and -mind still filled with the face of
the fungal gnome- he felt a patter of spores coat his face and fill his nostrils.
Dibus was surrounded by the images geometric shapes in cascading patterns, all
life wobbled and weaved. He saw the iconography of ancient civilizations flash
before him and began to feel more connected to the world around him and less
connected to his own body and self. <o:p></o:p></i></div>
<div class="Default">
<br /></div>
<div class="Default">
<i>In an instant
everything went dark and he was again face to face with the fungal visage of
Afrindi. This new visage was much more imposing and detailed than before, more immanent.
As Afrindi/the marsh/whatever spoke his voice echoed through Dibus’ mind, body,
and soul. He told Dibus things the former cook couldn’t begin to understand,
spoke in language that made no sense. Dibus felt as if he was being
deconstructed to be rebuilt into whatever form Afrindi intended for him. He
could see again the fungal elf and other frog-men standing perfectly still in
their new fungal forms in a ring. Dibus let out what he thought was a low
guttural growl, and began to fight back. He immediately met resistance as
Afrindi began shouting instead of simply speaking. The commands began to come
quicker and his mind swirled deeper into and away from itself. <o:p></o:p></i></div>
<div class="Default">
<br /></div>
<div class="Default">
<i>Then Dibus let go. Realzing
fighting was pointless, he shifted his focus to things he could understand.
Dibus remembered at that moment every recipe he had ever cooked and ingredient
he had ever used. He set out to recite each and every one in his mind, and looked
to expand into making new dishes he would have never thought of before. <o:p></o:p></i></div>
<div class="Default">
<br /></div>
<div class="Default">
<i>He began to see a
light amidst the darkness and he focused on it allowing himself to be drawn
deeper into its light. It was far behind the visage of Afrindi and the others
that he found the small pieces of them still left inside the Fungal Sieve. In
unison they whispered “Take this knowledge, this second chance and fight…” The
light washed over Dibus and his mind began spiraling backwards to where he had
sat down to commune with nature. The fractals and ancient geometry faded back
to the fungal marsh. The fungal elf dropped from the mushroom cap overhead
bearing down on him with a blade of hardened chitin – a weapon grown rather
than forged. The blade buried itself to the hilt in Dibus’ stomach and deep
into the mushroom behind him. Dark lines shot through Dibus as the blade
infected him. His eyes went dark and shut as he drew what would be his last
breathe as Dibus Dulpinzo.<o:p></o:p></i></div>
<div class="Default">
<br /></div>
<div class="Default">
<i>It was many days
later that Dibus Morelskein would open his eyes. He stood up from the base of
the mushroom where he had fallen to the fungal sword. He shook a few toadstools
from his face that looked more like fungus than actual hair. He stretched his
fingers felt for the influence of other minds: no, as far as he was aware there
were no other influences in his mind. Whatever Afrindi had tried to do hadn’t
worked, or perhaps had in ways the mad druid hadn’t anticipated. Dibus was no slave
to the mad arch-druid who’d spun away his life into the fungal sieve; he was
servant of the land and the creatures (mostly fungus) that longed to be free of
the warped domination they suffered under. <o:p></o:p></i></div>
<div class="Default">
<br /></div>
<div class="Default">
<i>Dibus knew what he
had to do, tend to the marsh, check Afrindi’s reach, and finally wrench control
of this place away from the madness of its creator… to be steward, part and
parcel of the wildness here without being master was the path he needed to
take. <o:p></o:p></i></div>
<div class="Default">
<br /></div>
<div class="Default">
<i>But to do that, Dibus
would need to learn more about himself, his new powers, and more about Afridini
if he had any hope of winning. He sensed many of the answers he sought might be
found in Salt in Wounds (and it was perhaps not a good idea to linger here in
the marsh, where Afrindi’s schizophrenic attention might well return to him),
so he set to walking to the city as the land whispered secret things in a voice
just below the bickering chatter of Afrindi.<o:p></o:p></i></div>
<div class="Default">
<br /></div>
<br />
<div class="Default">
<i>His stomach grumbled,
and he wondered what sorts of meals he could find (or make!) along the way.<o:p></o:p></i></div>

</span><span style="font-size: 18.0pt; line-height: 120%;">Description</span><span style="line-height: 120%; mso-bidi-font-size: 12.0pt;"><br />
<br />
<br />
Briddu Yittano is a large, heavily muscled man with brown skin, black hair and
gray eyes. His face is well lined from a hard life, his most notable feature is
his right arm which is an enlarged wrap of throbbing muscle, purplish and scaled where it doesn't have the look of exposed flesh. Briddu has a near-permanent scowl on his face.<br />
<br />
<br />
</span><span style="font-size: 18.0pt; line-height: 120%;">Early History</span><span style="line-height: 120%; mso-bidi-font-size: 12.0pt;"><br />
<br />
<br />
Briddu grew up poor in the Hind Quarter (what would become the modern day </span><a href="http://www.saltinwoundssetting.com/2015/12/the-tail-stones-district.html" target="_blank"><span style="color: #6f397f; line-height: 120%;">Tail Stones</span></a><span style="line-height: 120%; mso-bidi-font-size: 12.0pt;"> District). During the </span><a href="http://www.saltinwoundssetting.com/2015/11/the-12th-meridian-crisis.html"><span style="color: #6f397f; line-height: 120%;">12th Meridian
crisis</span></a><span style="line-height: 120%; mso-bidi-font-size: 12.0pt;">,
Briddu’s family’s hovel was one of the innumerable residences smashed by stones
sent careening by the Tarrasque's tail. While his family was gathered
around the dinner table, a large boulder crashed through the
roof. Briddu's mother and sister were killed instantly, while the stone settled
upon his screaming father’s legs. This was only the beginning of his trials.<br />
In the days to come, as the God-Butchers worked to get the beast back under
control, as leaning buildings collapsed and ankhegs stalked the </span><a href="http://www.saltinwoundssetting.com/2015/12/the-tail-stones-district.html" target="_blank"><span style="color: #6f397f; line-height: 120%;">Tail Stones</span></a><span style="line-height: 120%; mso-bidi-font-size: 12.0pt;"> district unchallenged; Briddu would do his best to care
for his trapped father and little brother. He tried to get help to move the
large stone that pinned his father, but no one would listen to the scrap of a
child crying for aid amidst the cacophony of the grieving city. The boy shifted
focus to just getting enough food and water for what remained of his family, on
just getting through the day. When his father’s legs began to sour, Briddu
assisted the older man in cutting himself free, gathered the maggots to eat
away at the diseased flesh till the stumps bled again, and finally sewed and
sealed the flesh with fire. After, his father was never the same and
a fifteen year old Briddu vowed that he would die before he would
ever be diminished in such a fashion.<br />
After, he spent every dawn waiting for hours in the
long 'relief' lines, trying to get through the crowd of panicking
refugees to beg for his family’s ration of water and gristle-hard Tarrasque
jerky.<br />
As the monsters and brigands were (mostly) cleared from the streets and
the </span><a href="http://www.saltinwoundssetting.com/2015/12/the-tail-stones-district.html" target="_blank"><span style="color: #6f397f; line-height: 120%;">Tail Stones District</span></a><span style="line-height: 120%; mso-bidi-font-size: 12.0pt;"> was returned to a semblance of order,
Briddu found work where he could. In an effort to rejuvenate their tarnished
image, the </span><a href="http://www.saltinwoundssetting.com/2015/04/the-order-of-god-butchers.html"><span style="color: #6f397f; line-height: 120%;">God-Butchers</span></a><span style="line-height: 120%; mso-bidi-font-size: 12.0pt;">began a large scale recruitment
drive, specifically targeting the lower classes. The teenaged Briddu leapt at
the chance to join.<o:p></o:p></span></div>

Butcher</span><span style="line-height: 120%; mso-bidi-font-size: 12.0pt;"><br />
<br />
<br />
Even on an apprentice’s salary, Briddu earned enough to provide for his maimed
father and sensitive brother, and he has continued to support them ever
since.<br />
Briddu quickly rose through the ranks of the God-Butchers; getting up
sooner, working harder, striving to be better and always pushing through
the hardships like a man possessed. If he became strong enough, then he’d never
have to feel the fear, the vulnerability of being that beggar boy from the</span><a href="http://www.saltinwoundssetting.com/2015/12/the-tail-stones-district.html" target="_blank"><span style="color: #6f397f; line-height: 120%;"> Tail Stones</span></a><span style="line-height: 120%; mso-bidi-font-size: 12.0pt;"> ever just three days away from watching his
little brother die of thirst. By the time he reached journeyman status, Briddu
had gained a reputation as a tough-as-horn burke who worked without quitting
and terrified his underlings while deferring to his betters. He spent some
time serving on several different meridian details until he’d finally
gained enough ‘yay’ votes from other God-Butchers to attempt the Rite of

incident. But when he stared into the eyes of the Tarrasque he saw the boy he
was; trembling, afraid in the ruins of a home while his father wept. In the
beast’s pupil, the scared child he’d denied so long stared back at
him. He tried to ignore his fear, charged forward to sever the tongue anyway.
But his footing was off, and the delay of a single stutter step caught him in
the beast’s jaws.<br />
The Tarrasque tore off and consumed his right arm and shoulder, tossed him away
like he was nothing more than the </span><a href="http://www.saltinwoundssetting.com/2015/12/the-tail-stones-district.html" target="_blank"><span style="color: #6f397f; line-height: 120%;">Tail Stones</span></a><span style="line-height: 120%; mso-bidi-font-size: 12.0pt;"> trash he always secretly believed himself to be. As
Briddu bled out, struggling to use his greatsword to prop himself up to stand,
his God-Butcher brothers & sisters rushed in to help him; screaming for the
surgeon-alchemists.<br />
Applying a pancreatic poultice to his ruined shoulder, the healers only
intended to staunch the bleeding. While limited regeneration is not unknown
when using Tarrasque derived alchemy, it many Briddu included, when the limb
grew back in its current form. Briddu Yittano is the most successful such
recovery to date, so much so that he was able to resume his duties as
journeyman God-Butcher, dedicating himself to retaking the Rite of
Mutual-Recognition.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<div>
</div>
<span style="font-size: large;">Behavior</span><br />
<div>
</div>
Briddu has a tremendous chip on his (disfigured) shoulder, due in equal parts to his personal history, his failure in the Rite of Mutual-Recognition, and his sensitivity about his appearance. As such, he uses his status of God-Butcher as well as his own obvious martial prowess to bully his way through life deferring only to Master <a href="http://www.saltinwoundssetting.com/2015/04/the-order-of-god-butchers.html">God-Butchers</a>. Briddu regularly picks fights, is belligerently drunk on blood wine much of the time he’s not actively working.<br />
<div>
</div>
<span style="font-size: large;">Goals</span><br />
<div>
</div>
To pass the Rite of Mutual-Recognition, either by growing strong enough or by gaining some unknown advantage.<br />
<div>
</div>
<em>Plot Hooks/GM Uses</em><br />
<div>
</div>
<ol>
<li>Briddu is best encountered by the party when they are at much lower levels than him. Perhaps he does the classic shoulder bump, pushing past a PC to demonstrate his power; maybe ignoring them or demanding an apology.</li>
<li>The party might be hired to abduct Briddu, the miraculous recovery of a limb stronger than what he had before is of great interest to several local alchemists who would like nothing more than to dissect him.</li>
<li>Briddu could hire the party to help him pass the rite of mutual recognition, alternately this contract may be arranged by a benefactor looking for leverage over a Master God-Butcher (this could be accomplished by stealthily reflecting sunlight into its eye with a giant, hidden mirror or secretly suppressing, wounding, or distracting the beast when Briddu is supposed to be facing it alone).</li>
<li>Briddu might be involved in the criminal underworld, using his status as God-Butcher to engage in ‘light’ smuggling or using his fearsome appearance for enforcement. In such a role, he could be either be an obstacle or questionable ‘ally’ for the party depending on their activity.</li>

larger than before to split his lips and reveal his sharp teeth. As a young
half-orc, he’d loved nothing more than fighting without weapons... always felt there was something unfair about swords, axes, and more. And even now, decades later,
even now, after all his master’s lessons to empty his heart of desire he still
loved a good fight, loved to test and push and thrill at battle on scales the

of hunger and fear and certainly not now in his life of toil and terror. But he

waking now and just beginning to shake the sleep dust out of the corners of its
eyes (not that the city, nor the bounty at its heart, ever truly slept).
Merchants hauled out their wares to their stalls -many ritually counting their

have opened a vein he mused). Idly, he considered the dangers he might face

aloud the prayer of thankfullness for the bound Tarrasque, great bounty of Macinfex that had delivered so

alive – only after securing them would he move to calling down aggressive,

<span style="color: black; font-family: "Arial",sans-serif; font-size: 10.5pt; mso-fareast-font-family: "Times New Roman";">In the year before binding, Lord General Alastair Ghent marshalled
and led al battalion of the Army of Thirteen that would later formed the Third
House. Lord Ghent was a powerful noble and a warlord of some renown even before
the Tarrasque attacked known for his a taste for exotic flavors and liquors. He
kept Roman DuFaine as his private valet and personal chef, a former peasant picked
up out of a seedy backwater tavern where the commoner chose his ambition over a
serving girl to whom he was betrothed. Roman had always had ambition above his
station, and this was not lost on Alastair. The valet was present for every
meeting, in every war room, and overheard every business dealing, and the
various currents of black mail that Lord Ghent ever</span><a name='more'></a> attended to to raise his
forces and ensure that he would profit from the ‘inevitable victory over the
beast.’ Roman quickly made himself indispensable to Lord Ghent, and became both
a trusted friend and adviser.<o:p></o:p><br />
<br />
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background: white; line-height: normal; margin: 0in 0in 0pt; vertical-align: top;">
<span style="color: black; font-family: "Arial",sans-serif; font-size: 10.5pt; mso-fareast-font-family: "Times New Roman";">On the day of Binding as the Tarrasque struck unexpectantly Lord
General Alastair Ghent was slain even as he readied his immovable harpoon.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>At his failing, it seemed that his battalion
would route and possibly spell defeat for the army of thirteen. In this moment,
Roman stepped up to the ballista where the harpoon still lay and spoke the
first word that came to mind… rumored to be the name of his serving girl fiancé
from so many years before.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>And whether
by intent or instinct he managed to sink his harpoon into through the beast’s
chest, where it would be discovered some of choicest meats and organs lay. And
while the God-Butchers would eventually discover that the Tarrasque produces
all manner of tissues and organs throughout its body, the “Prime Organs” (those
which reside in the correct anatomical position inside the body) are
particularly prized magically, alchemically, and culinarily with their purity
making them particularly potent and easy to fabricate and process into reagent
form.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<br />
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background: white; line-height: normal; margin: 0in 0in 0pt; vertical-align: top;">
<span style="color: black; font-family: "Arial",sans-serif; font-size: 10.5pt; mso-fareast-font-family: "Times New Roman";">Despite his meager background, Roman was recognized as one of the
13 heroes and eventually raised to status of Binder-Lord as the encamping army
formalized into fortress and then city a claim bolstered by documents from the
childless Lord Ghent naming the valet his heir apparent. Roman, despite his
lack of skill with sword sorcery, or alchemy, performed his duties with an
intense practicality which would see his fortunes (and the eventual fortunes of
Third House) rise. His shrewd mind for business quickly earning respect from anyone
who dismissed him as nothing but an ‘up-jumped cook.’ Roman was one of the
first to realize that as the city that grew up around the Tarrasque, it would
require adequate food and water, but most importantly water.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>And as water started to become scarce due to the
taint he profited greatly as majority backer behind the construction of the
aqueduct. He also began to monopolize the import of fresh vegetative foodstuffs
& spices which were difficult or impossible to grow in the immediate
vicinity of the city; a great deal of control that third house continues to
enjoy till this day. He also was one of the first to begin marketing the wares
of the Tarrasque to distant cities and states. To further his agenda, he began
to form ruthless monopolies on the import of all spices, herbs, sugar, and
salt. Innumerable Chefs, and street vendors from the smallest to the largest
had to pay respects to the 3rd House if they hoped to have any
chance of success in the city.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>Spice
smugglers while plentiful in the beginning of Salt in Wounds have become fewer
and fewer over time; the grizzly ends most would meet make those remaining
enjoy a particularly lucrative enterprise.</span></div>

<div class="MsoNormal" style="background: white; line-height: normal; margin: 0in 0in 0pt; vertical-align: top;">
<span style="color: black; font-family: "Arial",sans-serif; font-size: 10.5pt; mso-fareast-font-family: "Times New Roman";">Roman ensured that his children and their children would be the
best educated and best counseled house in Salt in wounds.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>He laughed at his fellow binder-lords martial
obsessions and expansive schemes, and laid the ground work and set an example
of the power that could be amassed simply through shrewd, ruthless
mercantilism, establishing traditions that are followed till present day.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span></span></div>

<div class="MsoNormal" style="background: white; line-height: normal; margin: 0in 0in 0pt; vertical-align: top;">

great grandfather’s tradition, owns two of the finest restaurants in the entire
city.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>Gerard has also surrounded himself
with the best counsel money can buy and relies heavily on Drummond Carter, his
Man at Arms when it comes to defending his interest where force is necessary.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>Gerard has also proved to be a shrewd
tactician and has made several moves though both Business and marriage to for
powerful alliances to further cement his place in Salt in Wounds. <o:p></o:p></span></div>

collect rainwater, and other utilities achieved through both physical/mechanical
means as well as magical. In secret, the Third House maintains vast
extra-dimensional spaces full of water and food stores large enough to sustain
the house and those who serve “vital relationships” for several years. However,
none but Gerard and Drummond know of their existence.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<br />
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background: white; line-height: normal; margin: 0in 0in 0pt; vertical-align: top;">
<span style="color: black; font-family: "Arial",sans-serif; font-size: 10.5pt; mso-fareast-font-family: "Times New Roman";">Inside the house is a vast dining hall which is elegant in its
sheer simplicity.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>To service this hall
is an equally vast kitchen staffed by the best chef in the world (though
claimed vigorously by Gerard, the claim, while subjective, has been
substantiated by several well-traveled gastronomes) along with an abundance of
slaves, all trained meticulously to produce the finest cuisine.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>Chef Thomas Cetcham often employs adventurers
and mercenaries to bring him ingredients of the more dangerous variety, served
nowhere else in the world due to the dangers of collecting them.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>Many desirable ingredients (both flora and fauna)
can be gleaned from the Cap Caps if price is no object.<o:p></o:p></span></div>

due to the prohibitive costs of maintaining them with water. However, being
majority backer of the Sweet Water Aqueduct has afforded Gerard the ability to
maintain these lavish extravagances. Soil is imported from thousands of miles
away and planted in raised beds where fresh herbs and vegetables are grown for
consumption at the manor.<o:p></o:p></span></div>

<span style="font-family: "Calibri",sans-serif; font-size: 11pt; mso-bidi-font-family: Calibri;">By Jon. Pio<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<span style="font-family: "Calibri",sans-serif; font-size: 11pt; mso-bidi-font-family: Calibri;"><o:p><span style="font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: small;"> </span></o:p></span><br />
<span style="font-family: "Calibri",sans-serif; font-size: 11pt; mso-bidi-font-family: Calibri;">Every
aristocrat, from the lowest pickling house sub-scion to the Prime Meridian
House Stewards themselves, has at least one hazy memory from a House Impertabo
soiree. Those memories are painted from a wide palette: the spreads of
luxurious foods and exotic drink, the meticulously manicured gardens and
arboretums, the silver platters spread not with multi-hued gems but a selection
of the House's designer drugs, the loud and boisterous lesser House <i>fuori</i>,
and the lingering presence of the silent, masked House elders watching from
balconies above the ballroom floor.<o:p></o:p></span><br />
<br />
<div style="margin: 0in 0in 0pt;">
<span style="font-family: "Calibri",sans-serif; font-size: 11pt; mso-bidi-font-family: Calibri;">From the
outside, House Impertabo appears to be two houses. First, there are the <i>fuori</i>:
the younger scions of the House known for raucous behavior, unabashed revelry,
and jovial brawling. To the lay person, these are the only members of the House
they see or interact with. The second house, the <i>precisi</i>, are the
elders: enrobed, unnaturally silent, masked figures</span><a name='more'></a> rarely seen in public. They
haunt the corridors of aristocracy, chambers of high finance, and back rooms of
trading houses.<o:p></o:p><br />
<br />
<div style="margin: 0in 0in 0pt;">
<span style="font-family: "Calibri",sans-serif; font-size: 11pt; mso-bidi-font-family: Calibri;">Like all
Meridian Houses, House Impertabo has its fingers in many a Tarrasque meat pie.
Its strongest sphere of public influence is business consultation and
diplomatic affairs. The <i>precisi</i> are valued throughout the city as
impeccable advisors on mercantile deals and financial trades. The words they
whisper to their <i>fuori</i> heralds can swing a raw deal into a profitable
venture that could elevate a smaller house overnight. Being party to these lucrative
dealings has allowed House Impertabo to fill their own coffers. In fact, a
whole subset of Blood Merchants reaps enormous profit by mimicking the monetary
movements of House Impertabo <o:p></o:p></span></div>
<br />
<div style="margin: 0in 0in 0pt;">
<span style="font-family: "Calibri",sans-serif; font-size: 11pt; mso-bidi-font-family: Calibri;">After their role
as advisors and majordomos, House Impertabo is known for producing a variety of
medical and vanity drugs. Many a regretful reveler has picked up a pack of
Fancyfree to ease the symptoms of the previous night's drunken tryst with a
citizen of negotiable affection. From their processing of the Tarrasque
hindquarters and decades of scrupulous experimentation, House chemists distill
and process chemicals and components into medicines and remedies. House
Impertabo avoids producing any magical or alchemical reagents, preferring to
trade or sell them wholesale to their alchemist allies. The density of
phosphorescence in the Tenth Meridian and its high demand for ghoul upkeep by
House 5 has linked those two houses in an alliance of meat and money. <o:p></o:p></span></div>
<br />
<div style="margin: 0in 0in 0pt;">
<span style="font-family: "Calibri",sans-serif; font-size: 11pt; mso-bidi-font-family: Calibri;">Below the banal
gaze of the lay public, House Impertabo is a narcotic maker of the highest
regard. In laboratories deep underground, bubbling chemical vats and eldritch
machinery churn out the city's supply of <a href="https://www.blogger.com/null" style="mso-comment-date: 20170808T1603; mso-comment-reference: JP_2;">Shine, Slip, Butcher's Bliss, Marrocaine, Salty
Nan, Jut, Tet, Hornblow, Black Annie, GORE!, Drover, and Ambergris Tobacco</a></span><span class="MsoCommentReference"><span style="font-family: "Calibri",sans-serif; font-size: 8pt; mso-ascii-theme-font: minor-latin; mso-bidi-font-family: "Times New Roman"; mso-bidi-theme-font: minor-bidi; mso-fareast-font-family: Calibri; mso-fareast-theme-font: minor-latin; mso-hansi-theme-font: minor-latin;"><!--[if !supportAnnotations]--><span style="mso-special-character: comment;"> </span></span></span><span style="font-family: "Calibri",sans-serif; font-size: 11pt; mso-bidi-font-family: Calibri;">. Most citizens do not associate the name House Impertabo with the
narcotics they use to excite their lives or deaden their pain, but the higher
the social echelon, the more likely someone knows that if you want to party, an
Impertabo <i>fuori</i> is the person you need.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<br />
<div style="margin: 0in 0in 0pt;">
<span style="font-family: "Calibri",sans-serif; font-size: 11pt; mso-bidi-font-family: Calibri;">Even more secret
than the narcotics production is House Impertabo's prized creation: a drug
called Veri. Distilled from a mixture of yet unidentified fluids extracted from
deep within the Tarrasque hindquarters, Veri is the drug upon which the entire
House is built. The purest form of Veri is a viscous blood red wine consumed
via injection to the throat. A Veri user is gifted with a supernatural ability
to determine the Truth of a statement. It allows a <i>precisi</i><span class="m7225277342665230261gmail-apple-converted-space"> </span>to cut through
layers of context, self-denial, and outright deception to firmly grasp what is
True. It is because of this drug that the House is so valued as advisors and
consultants. While on Veri, the user cannot speak untruth themselves without suffering
intense pain and even bodily damage. This side effect explains the necessity of
having both the<span class="m7225277342665230261gmail-apple-converted-space"> </span><i>fuori</i><span class="m7225277342665230261gmail-apple-converted-space"> </span>and the <i>precisi</i>. <o:p></o:p></span></div>
<br />
<div style="margin: 0in 0in 0pt;">
<a href="https://www.blogger.com/null" style="mso-comment-date: 20170808T1604; mso-comment-reference: JP_3;"><span style="font-family: "Calibri",sans-serif; font-size: 11pt; mso-bidi-font-family: Calibri;">After a violent intra-house
battle of succession, house elders made it a requirement that all members of
standing be dosed with Veri at all times. The inability to speak untruths to
each other has solidified the unity of the House. It is quite difficult to
betray your mother and steal her position when you are completely incapable of
lying to her (although this makes the intra-house intrigues all the more
complex and creative). Through generations of this tradition, the governance of
the House is incredibly loyal and unified, almost to the point of cult-like
devotion.</span></a><!--[if !supportAnnotations]--><!--[endif]--></div>
<br />
<div style="margin: 0in 0in 0pt;">
<span style="font-family: "Calibri",sans-serif; font-size: 11pt; mso-bidi-font-family: Calibri;">To minimize pain
from speaking untruth, the <i style="mso-bidi-font-style: normal;">precisi</i>
whisper their words to their retinue who then transmit them to clients. The
lesser, younger members of House Impertabo, the <i style="mso-bidi-font-style: normal;">fuori</i>, exist to interact with the public at large; to be the liars,
the faces, and the voice of their <i style="mso-bidi-font-style: normal;">precisi</i>
masters.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>All <i style="mso-bidi-font-style: normal;">fuori</i> aspire to join the ranks of the <i style="mso-bidi-font-style: normal;">precisi</i> in time which is why most of the <i style="mso-bidi-font-style: normal;">fuori</i> are loud and boisterous bon vivants. These assistants know
that their destiny eventually will travel into a life of opulent silence so
they seek to make as much noise as possible until that glorious reward is
bestowed. <span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>The exorbitant parties House
Impertabo often throws are as much nostalgia on louder times for the <i style="mso-bidi-font-style: normal;">precisi</i> as well as an outlet for the <i style="mso-bidi-font-style: normal;">fuori</i>. <o:p></o:p></span></div>
<br />
<div style="margin: 0in 0in 0pt;">
<span style="font-family: "Calibri",sans-serif; font-size: 11pt; mso-bidi-font-family: Calibri;">There is
another, darker, side effect of Veri usage. After mere weeks of consistent Veri
usage, physical deformity starts to manifest from the injection point at the
throat and spreads outwards to the face and chest. The disfiguring caused
by this long-term use is why the <i style="mso-bidi-font-style: normal;">precisi</i>
wear masks. The House’s vain and arrogant top clientele would most likely
recoil at the true visage of a <i style="mso-bidi-font-style: normal;">precisi</i>
elder. As per tradition, the more beautiful and intricate the mask, the more
horrid and vile the disfigurement hidden beneath. <o:p></o:p></span></div>
<br />
<div style="margin: 0in 0in 0pt;">
<span style="font-family: "Calibri",sans-serif; font-size: 11pt; mso-bidi-font-family: Calibri;">With Veri as
their tool, the Impertabo earn additional revenue through blackmail and
interrogation. Analyzing the small talk of aristocrats for Truth at one of their
many banquets and balls is profitable on its own without forcing secrets out of
any guest. Uncovering information and prying thoughts out of prisoners is quite
easy when dosed with a small amount of Veri. There is no need for red hot
pokers or rusty pliers when your own body tears itself apart should you speak
untruth. <o:p></o:p></span></div>
<br />
<div style="margin: 0in 0in 0pt;">
<span style="font-family: "Calibri",sans-serif; font-size: 11pt; mso-bidi-font-family: Calibri;">Armed with
riches, black ledgers full of compromising information, and a tireless pursuit
of Truth, House Impertabo under the leadership of Binder-Lord Baldomero
Impertabo is a major player in the intrigue of the City of Salt in Wounds yet
they make no overt moves to gain more power or control. With what they know and
what they could reveal, their unseen, deformed hands could already be clutching
innumerable puppet strings attached to the powerful across the city.<o:p></o:p></span></div>

</span><br />
<div style="margin: 0in 0in 0pt;">
<b style="mso-bidi-font-weight: normal;"><span style="font-family: "Calibri",sans-serif; font-size: 16pt; mso-bidi-font-family: Calibri; mso-bidi-font-size: 11.0pt;">Primi Precisi Baldomero
Impertabo, Binder-Lord of the 10th Meridian<o:p></o:p></span></b></div>
<br />
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 8pt;">
<span style="font-family: Calibri;">The current Binder-Lord for House Impertabo is Baldomero
Impertabo, a direct descendant of the original hero which helped bind the Tarrasque,
Piorvani Impertabo. Much like the first of his line, Baldomero was a rake in
his younger days; from duels in the street to the Saint Jacopo’s Eve Orgy (now
immortalized in the painting of the same name; House Impertabo Galleria, West
Mezzanine). Rakishness and skill with a rapier led to an ever-rising position
in the House Militia. Under his leadership as Consgli of the Militia, House
Impertabo’s control of street level narcotics dealing expanded through a
targeted acquisition of the city’s water dens and other havens of inequity. Additionally,
his decision to focus militia <i style="mso-bidi-font-style: normal;">fuori</i>
as bodyguards for the young aristocrats of the city ensured House Impertabo was
in a good position to advise them with the <i style="mso-bidi-font-style: normal;">precisi</i>
later in life.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<br />
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 8pt;">
<span style="font-family: Calibri;">Today, few lay their eyes upon Baldomero and not just
because of the severe amount of Veri-based disfigurement he has suffered. The
Binder-Lord spends most of his time within the house tower in Beast’s Crown. Known
for their somber subtlety, most citizens would casually ignore the unassuming
tower which belongs to the 10<span style="font-size: x-small;">th</span> Meridian house, their gaze distracted
by the encircling taverns, water dens, and flesh pits. Baldomero serves as
advisor to the <i style="mso-bidi-font-style: normal;">precisi</i> below him,
shaping the way they exert their influence in the various financial and
diplomatic dealings into which they have inserted themselves. <span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>Unbeknownst to all but the closest family
members, Baldomero has gotten more and more obsessed with his physical decline
and advancing age. It is because of this fear of the end that he has drawn his
House closer and closer to House Five; offering secrets, wealth, and choice Tarrasque
cuts in exchange for more and more arcane forms of life extension. His thoughts
turn to ghoulification at times, but he worries that if he became immune to
Veri usage s a ghoul, his place as head of House would be made invalid.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<b style="mso-bidi-font-weight: normal;"><span style="font-size: 16pt; line-height: 107%; mso-ascii-font-family: Calibri; mso-bidi-font-family: Calibri; mso-bidi-font-size: 11.0pt; mso-fareast-font-family: "Times New Roman"; mso-hansi-font-family: Calibri;"><span style="font-family: Calibri;">Altopar Menzogna-Impertabo, Keeper of the Black
Ledgers<o:p></o:p></span></span></b><br />
<br />
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 8pt;">
<span style="font-family: Calibri;">The Library of Black Ledgers is a near-mythical warehouse of
information and secrets guarded zealously by the Impertabo family. From details
of the most banal meeting between a God-Butcher and a Marrowminer eighteen
years ago, to a meticulously collected list of possible command words of all
Thirteen Meridian anchors, the Library contains data on an unimaginable scale. Most
House members who have been blessed with access have never even lain eyes on
the shelves and shelves of books, racks of scrolls, and drawers of tablature;
opting instead for a comfortable salon where a <i style="mso-bidi-font-style: normal;">fuori</i> and <i style="mso-bidi-font-style: normal;">precisi</i> Weaverscribe
pair analyze the information request and bring forth the relevant materials. Of
course, the request for the information is itself logged and added to one of
the Black Ledgers for future analysis.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<br />
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 8pt;">
<span style="font-family: Calibri;">Altopar Menzogna-Impertabo, great nephew of Baldomero
Impertabo, serves the family as chief librarian and keeper of the Black
Ledgers. He has chosen to remain a <i style="mso-bidi-font-style: normal;">fuori</i>
and go without Veri his entire life as a sacrifice for his specialized role. His
memory is unparalleled and his ability to weave together flimsy and tenuous
threads of information into a tapestry from which the House may act has proven
priceless again and again. <span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>His role
places him as one of the most important viziers of the Binder-Lord, yet his own
secret ambition and zealotry may ultimately mean the downfall of the House or
the city itself.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<br />
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 8pt;">
<b style="mso-bidi-font-weight: normal;"><span style="font-size: 16pt; line-height: 107%; mso-ascii-font-family: Calibri; mso-bidi-font-family: Calibri; mso-bidi-font-size: 11.0pt; mso-fareast-font-family: "Times New Roman"; mso-hansi-font-family: Calibri;"><span style="font-family: Calibri;">The Mondus Veri<o:p></o:p></span></span></b></div>
<br />
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 8pt;">
<span style="font-family: Calibri;">The Impertabo dedication to the truth manifests zealously in
some individuals.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>They find its pursuit
and adherence a near religious mandate, sometimes even punishing dishonesty at
the expense of the House’s holdings. This crusade resulted in the creation of
the Mondus Veri cult within the ranks of House Impertabo. The Mondus Veri
believe that a state of pure Truth can be attained within the City of Salt in
Wounds: the elimination of secrets, the end of intrigue, the expulsion of
dishonesty, and the dispelling of all illusion. How they plan to accomplish
this goal is unknown but some mass exposure of Veri or public access to the
Black Ledgers must be involved, with House Impertabo ascending to the ultimate
keepers of veracity. The House tends to crack down on proven members of Mondus
Veri, considering their actions in direct conflict with the advancement of the
House and its agenda. Despite the persecution, membership continues to increase,
including the recent addition of Altopar Menzogna-Impertabo himself. Suspicious
of the head spymaster, he proved his dedication to the cause by informing the
cult leaders of his evidence-backed hypothesis concerning the true nature of
the unknown chemicals extracted from the Tarrasque’s abdomen; the same
chemicals from which Veri is distilled. <o:p></o:p></span></div>

<span style="font-family: inherit; font-size: large;"><strong>Approaching the City</strong></span><br />
<span style="font-family: inherit;"></span><br />
<div>
</div>
<span style="font-family: inherit;">Everyone knows how the City of Salt in Wounds came about. But for those who have not visited in person, it is hard to conceive of the scale of the place. It is even harder for outsiders to understand how wholly the economic engine of butchering the bound Tarrasque has transformed the society of Salt in Wounds and reshaped the surrounding landscape.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: inherit;">Upon approach to the city, the first thing a traveler will note is the sounds of the monster screaming. Its roar echoes </span><br />
<a name='more'></a><span style="font-family: inherit;">for dozens of leagues, and the ground occasionally trembles as the creature at the core of Salt in Wounds thrashes. Most times, the <a href="http://www.saltinwoundssetting.com/2015/04/the-order-of-god-butchers.html" target="_blank">God-Butchers</a> and Marrow Miners keep the creature unconscious but even they -toiling night and day- can not extract enough to keep the creature down every hour.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: inherit;">Drawing closer, the traveler will notice the shift in ecology and weather; the deciduous forest with its seasonal snows gives way to a humid, almost tropical zone. The temperature for the surrounding area keeps steady at 80 degrees or higher, sometimes reaching into the hundreds even in the dead of winter. However, the tropical plants here are unique, twisted and changed from ground soaked in red. Travelers should be aware that from this point on, the <a href="http://www.saltinwoundssetting.com/2015/07/tarrasque-fed-mutations.html" target="_blank">water is no longer safe to drink</a> – Salt in Wounds is provided with <a href="http://www.saltinwoundssetting.com/2015/09/water-red-river-and-clear-water-aqueduct.html" target="_blank">imported water</a> carried into the city at great expense.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: inherit;">Very quickly even experienced mages will discover that magic functions differently in and around Salt in Wounds, possibly of result of the Tarrasque’s legendary resistance to magic seeping out with its vital fluids and essence into the land now thirsty for its blood. By the time the traveler can see the walls, they will also see the beasts horns peaking up above even the tallest towers built by the <a href="http://www.saltinwoundssetting.com/2015/04/the-13-meridian-houses.html" target="_blank">Binder-Lords</a> of Salt in Wounds. The air above the city is blackened with a swarm of stirges and hungry gulls cawing to swoop down for scraps from the never-ending butchery.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: inherit;">Salt in Wound’s famous marketplace -<a href="http://www.saltinwoundssetting.com/2015/12/the-throat.html" target="_blank">The Throat</a>- extends far beyond its gates, and even a mile outside the city the traveler will be assaulted by innumerable merchants hawking their wares.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: inherit;"></span><br />
<div>
</div>
<span style="font-family: inherit; font-size: large;"><strong>The City</strong></span><br />
<span style="font-family: inherit;"></span><br />
<div>
</div>
<span style="font-family: inherit;">Entering through the main gate, visitors must press through the rich market to gain access to the rest of the city. This chaotic bazaar known as <a href="http://www.saltinwoundssetting.com/2015/12/the-throat.html" target="_blank">the Throat</a> continues almost to the processing core of Salt in Wounds itself; the fortress <a href="http://www.saltinwoundssetting.com/2016/01/the-fortress-salzinwuun.html" target="_blank">Salzinwuun </a>around which the rest of city was built. Of course, a large number of merchants are involved in the selling & buying of water and Tarrasque byproducts, but nearly anything can be bought or sold in Salt in Wounds: slaves, drugs, all manner of vice – even the rare goods that are technically illegal are generally tolerated if the sellers and buyers can learn to behave themselves and pay off the right <a href="http://www.saltinwoundssetting.com/2015/12/the-house-militias.html" target="_blank">House Militia Captains</a>.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: inherit;">To the north in the city, in the <a href="http://www.saltinwoundssetting.com/2015/12/the-beast-crown-district.html" target="_blank">Beast Crown District</a>, are the manor-towers of the <a href="http://www.saltinwoundssetting.com/2015/04/the-13-meridian-houses.html" target="_blank">Binder-Lords</a>. Most of these hereditary oligarchs can trace their lineage back to the original adventurer heroes who bound the Tarrasque; their authority derived from knowledge of one of the <a href="http://www.saltinwoundssetting.com/2015/11/the-title-of-binder-lord-and-13.html" target="_blank">13 Command Words</a> that can release one of the immoveable harpoons which keep the Tarrasque bound. Rumors of the decadent excesses of these aristocrats run rampant throughout the city, the most salacious of which involve secret orgies fueled by blood wine where biting, cutting, & feral bloodletting intermingles with the carnal merging of bodies – a cacophony of violence, hunger, and lust that can last for as long as the blood wine continues to flow.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: inherit;">The core of town is dedicated to the eternal harvest itself. Scattered about the Tarrasque are hundreds of workers cutting at the beast, clearing the massive charnel sluices of obstructions, operating cranes to move the larger pieces, or extracting small pebbles, subtle glands, and tiny excretions of alchemical reagents. Overseeing it all are the <a href="http://www.saltinwoundssetting.com/2015/04/the-order-of-god-butchers.html" target="_blank">God-Butchers</a>, hulking figures with huge adamantine or Tarrasque bone greatswords strapped to their backs, screaming orders with mouths stained red with skin-chaw. Care is needed here, as bloated ramora fleas (roughly cow-sized parasites turned predator from long gorging on the Tarrasque) sometimes spill out into the city.</span><br />
<div>
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: inherit;">Everywhere is the stink of meat cooking, piss being boiled in huge vats, fat being rendered into its base components. When not drowned out by the calls of the beast, the city is loud with the hungry calls of men and other carrion eaters.</span></div>
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
Depending on what section of the city you find yourself in, roughly 1 in every 10 citizens may be horrifically <a href="http://www.saltinwoundssetting.com/2015/07/tarrasque-fed-mutations.html" target="_blank">mutated</a> or disfigured. <br />
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: inherit;">The southeastern section of town is currently referred to as the ‘<a href="http://www.saltinwoundssetting.com/2015/12/the-tail-stones-district.html" target="_blank">Tail Stones</a>’ district. This area is still mostly in ruins since the <a href="http://www.saltinwoundssetting.com/2015/11/the-12th-meridian-crisis.html" target="_blank">12th Meridian Crisis</a>, when the beast managed to briefly free its tail: whipping at the earth, stones & machinery behind itself and sending these projectiles hurtling through the air to smash innumerable city blocks like the work of a thousand catapults. While ‘safe’ now, only the desperate and impoverished reside in the <a href="http://www.saltinwoundssetting.com/2015/12/the-tail-stones-district.html" target="_blank">Tail Stones</a>.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: inherit;">There are also over environs, notably <a href="http://www.saltinwoundssetting.com/2016/08/sages-row.html" target="_blank">Sage’s Row</a> dedicated (primarily) to alchemical research as well as small districts dedicated to particular classes, professions, or even races. Each one of these contains secrets and intrigue well beyond the scope of this slim guide.</span><br />

But there is no universal factor towards gaining a mutation, even the scrupulously careful can sometimes find that merely living in the city will lead to startling transformations.</span></b><br />
As expected, due to their work habits approximately 90% of the <a href="http://www.saltinwoundssetting.com/2016/02/the-marrow-miners-public-knowledge.html" target="_blank">Marrow Miners</a> are afflicted with one or more mutation. Oddly,<a href="http://www.saltinwoundssetting.com/2015/04/the-order-of-god-butchers.html" target="_blank"> God-Butchers</a> almost *never* suffer mutations; the occurrences being so rare that <a href="http://www.saltinwoundssetting.com/2015/04/briddu-yittano-journeyman-god-butcher.html" target="_blank">Briddu Yittano's</a> arm is seen as an exceptional aspect to be ogled.<br />

To enter into the contract, the would-be undead must either pay a hefty fee or pledge to serve 5th house tirelessly for 100 years. This resurrection is usually handled by implantation of a small alchemical device filled with specially modified ghoul fever which ‘bursts’ when its owner’s life functions have ended. As a ghoul, you can continue to function much as you did before your death provided that you can gorge yourself on flesh… a more or less simply matter within the city limits but a significant concern if you venture beyond. The currency of the city features several distinct features. First, these copper, silver, gold and platinum tokens do not sport portraits but instead are pressed with famous phrases, maxims, and laws spouted by the aristocracy: which phrase is selected for placement on this year’s platinum (and -to a lesser degree- other metals) is a source of much competition and political maneuvering by the Binder-Lords. </span></span></div>

These are referred to as the ‘tip’ and ‘divet’ respectively. This construction makes Salt in Wounds coins easy to stack securely on top of one another (useful for quick counting and pushing stacks of coin back and forth across a table without risk of toppling). Coins are usually kept in neat rows within pouches with reinforced corners. Out of towners can often be identified by how they improperly shove coins into their pockets where they are liable to jut uncomfortably into flesh (or poke out of fabric). However, some especially cautious merchants are known to deliberately keep the tips of their coin stacks pressing into their skin to be aware if there’s a change in weight resulting from a visit by one of Salt in Wound’s notorious pickpockets or as part of a religious practice known as ‘merchant’s penance.’</span></span></div>

They are usually further annotated with different taverns, merchants, and lodging locations claiming to be the best (but ultimately determined by kickbacks received by the map making shop).<br />

<span style="font-family: inherit;">In <a href="http://www.saltinwoundssetting.com/2016/04/the-salt-in-wounds-calendar.html" target="_blank">67 AB</a>, a human mercenary warlord named Segund the Wyvern
King (so called for his command of two dozen of the creatures) set his eyes to
conquer the booming town of Salt in Wounds. Leading an army of 10000 (bolstered
by the aforementioned Wyverns and other magical support), the brilliant
logician managed to scale the steep track to Salt in Wounds with only a minimal
loss of life. Before him, he faced hastily conscripted forces of around 2000
militia, mercenaries, and irregulars and so –confident of an easy victory- the
general was already plotting how to best leverage this conquest for further
gains.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: inherit;">As the army grew closer, Salt in Wounds </span><a name='more'></a><span style="font-family: inherit;">was a frenzy of
activity as the powers of the city plotted and argued as to their response.
Finally, they agreed to a stratagem.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: inherit;">When Segund finally drew within view of the distant horns of
the Tarrasque, a cluster of women & men stood in his path, dressed in
finery and holding the flags for parley.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: inherit;">Segund, with his most trusted commanders, mounted their
Wyverns and flew to the meeting. Upon landing, the the warlord removed his helm
to the tinkle of trinkets and trophies from scores of victories that hung below
the visor.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: inherit;">“Hail, I am Segund - King of Wyverns.”</span><br />
<span style="font-family: inherit;">“Hail, I am Beutex Binder-Lady of the House of the 9<span style="font-size: small;">th
Meridian and I am here to accept your surrender and bare witness to your
retreat.”</span></span><br />
<span style="font-family: inherit;">The thick laughter of Segund and his honor guard echoed of
the mountains.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: inherit;">“Oh lady, thank you for bringing such mirth to what
otherwise threatened to be a fully dull conquest.” He swept his arm back to
show the thick ranks of well ordered soldiers behind him. “My forces outnumber
yours ten to one, and with five hundred of my veterans I could march over
everything your little town could throw at me.”</span><br />
<span style="font-family: inherit;">Beutex chuckled, said “I had heard you were a brilliant
tactician oh King of Wyverns, but I did not know you had a jester’s own gift
for comedy. To suggest that 500, or even all 10,000 of your veterans could face
the Tarrasque... hahahaha.”</span><br />
<span style="font-family: inherit;">Segund spat, his face suddenly red, “Do not think you can
bluff me. The Tarrasque is not yours to command; it is a bound source of your
city’s wealth, and it will be cheap meat for my army after I claim it and the
rest of your holdings by right of conquest.”</span><br />
<span style="font-family: inherit;">Beutex smiled a smile which didn’t reach her eyes, “My dear
Segund, I never suggested the Tarrasque was under our direction. But as to its
binding,” she gestured to a crimson flag held by her servant, “With a wave of
this, with my death, or with even ten forward steps of your army; the beast
will be released and I fear your forces will be quite insufficient… veterans
and all.”</span><br />
<span style="font-family: inherit;">Segund snarled, “You wouldn’t. You would all die, and you
would be remembered for all time as monsters who released that terror and
carnage back on the world.”</span><br />
<span style="font-family: inherit;">“I <u>would</u> and I <u>will</u> unless you march back down
the way you came. The city and the containment of the Tarrasque are ours by
sacred trust; any who try to strip us of what the gods have granted will –inevitably-
lead to the beast becoming free… even a decade of two makes no difference to
the world. Without the providence of the gods you wouldn’t be able to keep the
Tarrasque bound. And so we are of one accord; if you are set on trying to seize
what is divinely ours then we will release the binding today. In so doing we
are not monsters, we merely midwife the inevitable in such a way that YOU or
any like you will never see any profit from your transgression. You can lose
your army, your life, your all; you can blight the world… or you can march back
down the mountain. The choice is yours Segund.”</span><br />
<span style="font-family: inherit;">Segund shook his head, said “You lie.” </span><br />
<span style="font-family: inherit;">Stalking back to his
Wyvern, he began to bellow orders, “Mount up, command the men to advance and…”
before a spear, wielded by Gavene his lieutenant pierced his chest. Segund
sputtered, wheezed, and choked on his own blood as the Wyverns screeched. The
honor guard bowed to Beutex before mounting up and flying back to the army to
command its retreat. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: inherit;">As Segund breathed his last, the Binder-Lady strode to a
place beside him; idly watching the Wyverns and their riders fly back to the columns
of soldiers. She spoke then, and Segund’s last thought was uncertainty as to
whether the words were really meant for him or not, “Oh bold, conquering man at
arms; even if you would chance it your men have families and they know that nowhere
is safe from the Tarrasque. As long as men remember and fear the beast, the
city will never be taken from us by force.”</span><br />
<span style="font-family: inherit;">
</span><br />
<div style="margin: 0in 0in 8pt;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;">---</span></div>
<span style="font-family: inherit;">
</span><span style="font-family: inherit;">And so the ‘Wyvern Siege’ was lifted before it
even began, and what would come to be called the ‘All Consumption’ was
established where any military threat to sovereignty of the Binder-Lords would
be met by an unbinding of the Tarrasque. Scholars also argue that this
encounter was the earliest (non)battle of the ongoing series of conflicts which
would come to be known as the <a href="http://www.saltinwoundssetting.com/2016/05/salt-in-wounds-and-wider-world-synoma.html" target="_blank">Synoma’s ‘Artifact Wars’</a> wherein conventional
military forces were blunted or made irrelevant by the deployment of epic magic,
dangerous creatures, and artifacts.</span><br />

The most common punishments are fines (even for serious crimes for those who can afford it) followed by flogging, <br />
<a name='more'></a>branding, _ points of maiming, execution and truncation.<br />
<br />
Points of maiming follow a regular (cumulative) order and thus the relative disfigurement of an individual often provides information about the severity of their crimes. This maiming is in order: the extraction of an eye, the loss of five toes (across both feet), the loss of five fingers (across both hands), the loss of a hand, the loss of an arm, the loss of a foot, the loss of a leg. This order was selected as it was deemed to give the guilty the best chance to continue contributing economically. If a criminal ever reaches eight points of maiming, they are given the choice between truncation (amputation of both legs, both arms, tongue, and gouging of both eyes) and execution. Parts taken by these punishments are usually actioned to alchemist constructing flesh (or tarrasque flesh) golems. Adventurers, veterans, and even laborers who have lost limbs are usually assumed to be former or current criminals.<br />
<br />
<i>Smuggling</i> Fines up to Five Times Value, Branding and/or up to 3 Points Maiming <br />
<i>Conspiring to End the Tarrasque's Binding</i> Truncation or Execution<br />
<i>Theft</i> 1 point maiming<br />
<i>Runaway Slave</i> Branding, Flogging, and 1 Point Maiming<br />
<i>Murder</i> Execution<br />
<i>Magical Creation or Unauthorized Import of Water</i> Fines up to Double the Water's Value and up to 3 Points Maiming<br />
<i>Assault</i> Branding and up to 2 Points Maiming<br />
<i>Propagandizing</i> Special Case: 'propagandizing' is any speech deemed to 'threaten the economic, social, or cultural well-being of the city' and is a charge which can only be brought by a Binder-Lord. After conviction, the accusing Binder-Lord determines punishment which can range from a single copper fine to truncation, depending on recommendation of the Binder-Lord.<br />
<i>Unlicensed Ghoulification</i> Destruction of Ghoul and 1 Point Maiming for the Practioner (if applicable)<br />
<i>Use of a Command Word by any Non Binder-Lord</i> Truncation<br />
<i>Use of Magic of Alchemy to Remedy Court Ordered Maiming</i> Maiming Equal to what was healed/was proposed to be healed.<br />

<a href="https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/a/af/Clara_Jacobi-Tumor.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="198" src="https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/a/af/Clara_Jacobi-Tumor.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div style="border-image: none;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="border-image: none;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;">Renesec is the obscure, largely unknown God of Change who is
said to have no fixed appearance, house or location of worship. His/Her/It’s few
devotees meditate on their god’s presence in the growth of crops, the aging of
a face, the overthrow of a government. Renesec’s most ecstatic worshippers
adopt radically different mannerisms, behaviors, and even personalities at an
irregular schedule and hence are despised outcasts as individuals who are not
able to function in society writ large or even writ as small as an adventuring
party. However, Renesec has a thriving cult in Salt in Wounds who seek to
understand and grow close to their God as the ‘Lord of Mutation’ whose power
and majesty can best </span><a name='more'></a><span style="font-family: inherit;">be experienced in the endlessly varied twisted forms of Tarrasque-fed
mutations.</span><br />
<div style="border-image: none;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;">
</span></div>
<div style="border-image: none; margin: 0in 0in 8pt;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;">Every curl of flesh beyond its original form is deemed holy
by the cult, and from their simple temple in the tail stones (a bizarre
converted apartment to which they are forever adhering new layers of bizarre
ornamentation cast from powered Tarrasque scale) the church of the Lord of
Mutations preaches endlessly as to the need for the city fo fully embrace the
divine gifts Renesec pours out for his/her/its citizens.</span></div>
<div style="border-image: none;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;">
</span></div>
<div style="border-image: none; margin: 0in 0in 8pt;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;">While officially tolerated, the cult is large despised and
mocked. Even so, the church’s numbers continue to swell as more and more
individuals feel the ‘touch of Renesec’ and the scorn of the city only serves
to deepen their bonds to one another and their faith.</span></div>
<span style="font-family: inherit;">
</span><br />
<div style="border-image: none; margin: 0in 0in 8pt;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;">The cult provides food, housing, and even water for any so
long as they bare the mark of Renesec (any manner of mutation) which the
organization’s clerics can induce upon request. Especially with the uptick in
mutation rates, especially canny political observers believe the cult could
become a major political force in years to come even though in modern day it is
dismissed as a refuge for the poor, the desperate, and the mad. Rumors hold
that the cult has plans to spread the mutation throughout the city via the application
of divine magic or specially crafted alchemy, but nothing has ever been proven.</span></div>
<span style="font-family: inherit;">
</span><br />
<div style="margin: 0in 0in 8pt;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;">High Priestess: Quinay Mendij is a woman with a beautiful
face jutting out of a bloated, massive, horrendously mutated body (claimed to
be the most mutated creatue in the world). Three mouths split open her back,
looping spikes sprout at seeming random and twine together to form intricate
loops, and despite having ten arms and legs she must be carried on a litter by
the church’s faithful (who see this duty as a great honor). </span></div>
<span style="font-family: inherit;">
</span><br />
<div style="margin: 0in 0in 8pt;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;">The Holy Symbol of Renesec Lord of Mutation is living,
mutated flesh (those without any mutations are not accepted as worshippers of
Renesec).</span></div>

was) one of the finest alchemists of this age who left Salt in Wounds to pursue their research
outside of the city’s environs (and in a more controlled environment) by
setting up shop in a derelict manor and orchard that had been abandoned when
the taint of the Tarrasque soured the land. Provided with men & material,
the brilliant researcher vivisected dozens of mutated vagrants and hundreds of
exotic beasts to divine their secrets. Before their correspondence with some
</span><br />
<a name='more'></a><span style="font-family: inherit;">fellows based in Sage’s Row stopped, Mundacri claimed to have mastered
controlled mutations, spliced together numerous chimeric creatures in addition
to ‘seizing command the fundamental vital force present in the blood of all to create
life itself.’ That, however, was several months ago and no one has heard from
Mundacri since; not their friends or their (increasingly impatient) financial
backers. The laboratory of Dr. Mundacri is comprised of a main house, servant house
and guest house, as well as tens of subterranean chambers dug to house experiments,
supplies and staff.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: inherit;">

<div style="margin: 0in 0in 8pt;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><em><br /></em></span><br />
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><em>The Camp of the Mammoth Wardens</em><span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>The Mammoth Wardens are the remaining fraction
of the tribe of Stone Giants who escaped enslavement and now eke out an existence
amongst the mountains that ring Salt in Wounds, their numbers increased
somewhat by the inducted members –mostly ‘small people’ druids and rangers who
have ties to the Circle of Release. The camp moves monthly (on moonless nights)
and the tents that comprise are continually re-painted to blend into the
surrounding environment. In addition, the camp exercises extreme fire
discipline (to eliminate or hide any smoke) and makes regular use of hidden
caves amongst the crags. It is to this mobile camp that runaway slaves and
others fleeing Salt in Wounds often seek, although most die of exposure before
ever locating it.</span></div>
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span><br />

<span style="font-family: inherit;">
</span><br />
<div style="margin: 0in 0in 8pt;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><em>Shatter Peak Mass Grave</em> Forty miles east of Salt in Wounds,
the binding armies first made battle against the Tarrasque. Adopting a fighting
retreat, thousands died in the long valley, a trail of slain stretching leagues
until the Tarrasque was finally bound. In the chaos following the battle (where
the binders struggled with what to do after failing to find a way to permanently
kill the beast) uncountable corpses were left to rot where they lay, or became
buried in snow & frost. Clerics & adventurers have managed to clense most of the
area surrounding the city, but there are vast fields where the dead were never
granted proper rest and so the land is haunted with all manner of undead:
including many powerful disembodied spirits forever raging at the glut of a wicked
city whose very existence mocks their sacrifice. Shatter Peak is claimed to be
where the battle began; after the Tarrsque unexpectantly knocked over a
mountain top and caused its greatest carnage of the day in the resultant
landslide. Witches and necromancers have huts all throughout the area; plying
their trade with living and sentient dead alike. </span></div>
<span style="font-family: inherit;">
</span><br />
<div style="margin: 0in 0in 8pt;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><em>The Pool of All Forms</em> In a hidden cave, past an area of
stalagmites jutting forth like teeth where a man can scarcely squeeze by, is a perfect pool of what
– at first glance- appears to be water. A visitor who stares at the pool can –by
focusing on a single image- coax the liquid to float in the air and take any
form their so visualize. Any attempt to remove the liquid fails (it grows
increasingly heavy when it moves away from its source). Distraction –or the
visitor leaving- causes the liquid to sink back into it’s pool.</span></div>
<div style="margin: 0in 0in 8pt;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><em>High Rock Altar</em> Ten miles south of Salt in Wounds –in a
secluded plateau that offers an incredible view of the city – is a primitive seeming
altar of basalt, teeth and thorns from an unknown plant. This is an
altar to Tuska, and –though usually undefended- will be inevitably rebuilt or restored
by the local flocks of harpies if destroyed or otherwise defiled. Tuska’s
faithful meet here regularly, and use the altar is filled with carefully
encoded scrolls Tuska’s devotees sometimes use to send messages back and forth.</span></div>
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><em>
</em></span><br />
<div style="margin: 0in 0in 8pt;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><em>Verdant Fields</em> An extravagance of a Third Merdidian house
aristocrat, the Verdant Fields are a pastoral manor built into the side of a
mountain where the wealthy of Salt in Wounds can live in an imitation of traditional life. Incredibly powerful (and costly) magics that must be continually
refreshed keep the local climate for the few acres of farm impossibly pleasant,
and all manner of luxury fruits and vegetables are grown here. <span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span><span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span></span></div>

<span style="font-family: inherit;">Dwergo are the ‘true dwarves’ of legend; six foot, 500 hundred plus pound savants who lost their war against the elves after suffering from a reproductive curse that caused them only to be able to give birth to the greatly diminished dwarves of the modern era. They have been extinct extinct for 2000 years. <br />In their ruins below Salt in Wounds –the deepest rooms of the CapCaps- a frigid tomb was discovered by explorers which held the preserved corpses of several thousand Dwergo; many of which featured intricate clockwork prosthesis. Knowledge of this discovery</span><a name='more'></a><span style="font-family: inherit;"> was sold to an information brokers, and bought by a small cabal of ambitious journeymen alchemists who journeyed below the city and began extensive experimentation upon the corpses in addition to study of their augmentations. In the two decades of research, these young alchemists learned much until finally -using Tarrasque derived alchemy- they were able to resurrect several of the dead Dwergo.<br />After studying the reawakened beings and efforts to pierce the language barrier, the alchemists were quick to communicate they could inflict pain or even death upon the Reventant Dwergo. For their part, the Dwergo seemed to readily accept their lot and have begun to share their mysteries with the alchemists… though certain language barriers limit their usefulness. In actuality, the hyper-intelligent Dwergo have completely mastered the language of their captors and have begun to manipulate the ‘low born idiots’ in order to better learn about the remade world above & encourage the overconfident alchemists to resurrect more of their brothers and sisters. <br />Dwergo are phenomenally strong and fast, their natural physicality augmented by clever implants of clockwork. They are also preternaturally intelligent: able to learn a language in the course of an afternoon (with their own fractal, multifaceted communication method near impossible to teach any other race). If threatened, they will use their martial training (advanced enough to enable them to block and otherwise redirect much magic) to quickly end any threat. If seriously challenged, they will retreat and covertly survey their opponents (via their battles with proxies and other hazards) and use this knowledge to gain advantage on their attacks and strike with near perfect tactical brilliance. <br />All Alchemical Revenant Dwergo have a small ‘control’ device (a modified version of an alchemist testing apparatus which was itself created from knowledge gained by studying intact Dwergo devices) with tubuoles and prongs sunk into their neck. This device needs to be infused daily with a fresh distillate of a regenerative extract to keep the Dwergo ‘alive.’ While supposedly following the orders of their masters, the four score active Dwergo are secretly gathering enough knowledge and resources to usurp their ‘benefactors’ whereupon they plan to revive the additional 5000 other Dwergo, seize control of Salt in Wounds, and reestablish the Dwergo empire. </span><br />
